Using the google reader more efficiently

google_reader.jpgIf your the kind of person who follows all their favorite news feeds using the Google Reader, you might find yourself, like me, with hundreds of items to read through. Trouble is that a lot of the time there are only a few good items worth reading while the rest are just clutter.

To speed up the process, try scanning through your feeds and star-ing the items that look interesting. This way you can speed through all the items, preview stuff that might be interesting, and then come back to those items when you have a little more time.

This process is especially easy if you use some of the keyboard shortcuts provided by the Google Reader. j and k traverse up and down you items list, and s will star/un-star an item.

In just a few minutes you can go through all your new items and star the ones that might be worth spending more time on. Then just go to the starred item list and actually read on detail the items that you wanted. This way you speed through the chaff and can spend you time reading the wheat
